With just a handful of seniors, Marlboro will feature a fairly young lineup in 2018. There were several regulars lost to graduation, and the bulk of the returning starters check in around 120-138, and 152-170, so there will be several newcomers getting their shot at varsity, and possibly some of the returners wrestling up a weight or two to flesh out the lineup.

The key returner in the lower half of the lineup is the lone senior, Alan Lipovetsky. He was the team leader in wins in 2017, and the runner-up in D19 at 120, and could be primed for a big year in 2018. Another key figure in the lower half is junior Cristian Rial. Despite finishing the season with a sub-500 record a year ago, he did knock off several tough opponents in was my Top 10 at a few different points. Lipovetsky and Rial can really push each other in the room and give the Mustangs a solid presence down low among the newcomers.

Four starters are back in the upper half of the lineup in seniors Zach Sperling and Dan Shleyger, and juniors Evan Brown and Jon Catania. They'll be looked to provide leadership for what is going to be a very young group in the final few weights.

What really jumps out to me at first glance is the schedule... it is TOUGH! In addition to the A-North teams like Howell, Manalapan, CBA, Colts Neck, Freehold Twp, etc. there's also dates with Raritan, Long Branch, St John Vianney, Lacey, and Middletown North from the Shore, and tough out of conference matchups with Monroe and Del Val. That right there is no joke! One thing is for certain, this team will be battle tested come post-season time. With the kind of slate they have, it would be tough to judge this team on wins and losses. The path is there for them to get better and better as the season goes along, and let it all out come tournament time. It will be very interesting to see what head coach Charlie Frankel can do with the lightweights. He was a great 103-pounder for Marlboro in his high school days (2-time State placer) and went on to earn All-American honors at Delaware Valley. He's got two good, established guys down low in Lipovessky and Rial, and four frosh at 106-113 to develop. So keep an eye on that group as the season rolls on.
